June: Listening and Reading

I recently joined a book club, in Boise and it has opened my world to new books, that I may have never read on my own. I am so excited to share one we recently finished, called “The Many Daughters of Afong May” and thoughts on a couple other things I am reading and listening to this month.

FICTION

The Secrets We Kept, by Lara Prescott: The story of three women that started out as secretaries in the state department to then become spies during the Cold War. This is a fantastic book, that is easy to read and will have you staying up late to turn the next page!

The Many Daughters of Afong May, by Jamie Foy: An incredibly thought provoking fictional story about multiple generations of women and how their individual traumas impacted themselves and the generations after them. This book is a great read for anyone interested in family histories and how past generational trauma impacts those that come before and after us.

PODCAST

Throughline Podcast, by NPR: This podcast is fantastic! A topic is picked every week and explored through the eyes of historians, experts and those impacted by a specific topic or time in history. My favorite episodes include; “Seeking Asylum in the US (December 5, 2024 Episode) and “The Woman Behind the New Deal” (June 5, 2025 Episode). They also had a wonderful series about the Amendments in the US Constitution and what they mean to us today.
